Fuzzy, bright-eyed and no bigger than a baked potato, the American pika is the kind of critter you could imagine starring in a blockbuster animated movie for kids. With its high-pitched squeaks, its lightning quickness and its habit of racing around all summer to harvest and sun-dry "hay piles" of grasses and wildflowers for its winter meals, the tiny rabbit relative is one comical ball of fluff.

Tuesday, Jun 19 2012 06:47 PM If you've been wondering whatever happened to that "fight for the Kern River" thing I was harping on all the time, well, it's back -- finally. The city will issue its draft environmental impact report on restoring water to the river on a regular basis.

"Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home; that wildness is a necessity; and that mountain parks and reservations are useful not only as fountains of timber and irrigating rivers, but as fountains of life."

A woman who robbed a bank near Fashion Fair mall Tuesday morning was arrested minutes later at PG&E headquarters in downtown Fresno, where she told officers she had gone to pay her utility bill.
