According to members of the Section 1 basketball committee, the Biondi boys basketball team is under investigation for using an illegal player during Friday's Class D championship game. Biondi won its third straight Section 1 title by defeating Greenburgh Academy 69-59 at the County Center.

Iona Prep easily beat LaSalle 66-45 today at Mount St. Michael in the CHSAA A quarterfinals and advanced to the league semis for the second straight year. It is a different story for the 2012 Gaels, however, with Cardinal Hayes, Mount and Stepinac - last year's other semifinalists - up in the AA.

I received a text last night before 7 from a former Section 1 coach. He was kind enough to remind me I had picked just about every outbracket game wrong. Ultimately, my picks turned out OK, but, admittedly, I swung and missed on most of the 50/50 games (or what I thought were the 50/50 games).

Seeds were announced on Monday for the Section 1 boys and girls basketball tournaments, which will begin on Wednesday. The Arlington High School boys received the best seed among local boys teams, picking up the sixth seed in Class AA and will host No. 11 Horace Greeley in a first-round game at 7 p.m.

The CHSAA A division intersectional playoffs begin on Saturday at Mount St. Michael. Iona Prep is the only local team involved, but the Gaels certainly have as good a chance as anyone at winning it all. Because Iona Prep won the CHSAA's New York-A division, they don't tip in the playoffs for nearly two more weeks.
